Movie review: Hugo

Starring Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley and Chloe Grace Moretz, the adventure film Hugo takes audiences back in time to 1930s Paris with nostalgia, emotion and a whole lot of charm.

Hugo

Typically, films directed by Martin Scorsese should be on a parents' do-not-rent list. But that is not the case for Hugo, the incredibly charming and emotionally moving story of an orphan who finds a home inside a train station clock in 1930s Paris.

The gorgeously shot and well-acted version of the children's book The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick is Martin Scorsese's latest masterpiece. Who knew the director of such violent films like Goodfellas, The Departed, Gangs of New York, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull was really a softy at heart?

Trading machine guns for pixie dust

Scorsese has a long list of blood on his resume, but surprisingly there is no red in this movie. It's colored with golden flecks of childhood dreams, old-fashioned clocks, vintage movies and a whole lot of magic.

Purely emotional and full of inspiration, this story takes place at a time when the first World War was not far behind and kids without parents were taken directly to the orphanage.

Our hero is Hugo Cabret, a boy who loses his father in a museum fire. Hugo now lives with his drunk uncle in the grand train station of Paris.

Borat makes a fantastic villain

Hugo

Scorsese creates a world unlike any other in a train station that is a city in itself. The café owner is charmed by the newspaper man. The disgruntled station inspector , although perpetually after Hugo to turn him into the authorities, has an eye for Lisette the flower girl . These colorful characters bring a sense of community to a boy who has no family.

In a constant search for lost clock parts necessary to fix the mechanical man his father left behind, Hugo ultimately faces off with the toy shop owner Georges Méliès, played splendidly by British actor Ben Kingsley .

There is something strange about this sad old character and his mysterious dislike for Hugo's desire to fix the mechanical man. As the story unfolds, the audience discovers what makes Georges tick and why Hugo has the desire to fix anything that seems to be running hopelessly out of time.

Georges' adopted daughter Isabelle, played delightfully by Chloe Grace Moretz, soon becomes Hugo's only friend on this journey to find love, happiness and purpose in the world. No machine comes with extra parts, Hugo tells us. So, if the world is like a machine, there should be a reason we are all here.

Best 3D this year!

Hugo

Heartfelt and magical, Hugo uses its 3D to the best we've seen so far this year. If you want the ultimate experience of watching this magnificent rendition of a children's book, see it in the theater, with glasses, and with loved ones close by. Because knowing you're part of something is better than anything, according to Martin Scorsese, the man who put aside violence and destruction to show us that life is about finding purpose and connecting with those you love.

If you like adaptations like The Secret Garden, emotional dramas like Oliver Twist, adventure films like The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and colorful cinematographic wonders like Amélie, then Hugo will be an excellent choice for you.

Bottom line: If you're in the mood for a gorgeously-shot and beautifully-rendered 3D film about finding your place in the world, Hugo makes it clear that even the most cynical of men have a heart.

Carrie remake: Who'll be our new horror heroine?

Who wants to play Carrie White? The teen is best known for murdering her school's student body, while being slathered in pig's blood. She also has telekinetic powers and isn't afraid to use them. For the upcoming remake, two young actresses are vying for the famous role.

Chloe Grace Moretz

Carrie's back! The horror icon is heading to the big screen -- again. Acclaimed director Kimberly Peirce has narrowed down the candidates for the lead in her adaptation of Stephen King's novel.

Two actress have fought their way to the front of the line and they're Chloë Grace Moretz and Haley Bennett . One of these talented ladies could fill the shoes of Academy Award winner Sissy Spacek, who played the role in Brian De Palma's 1976 film.

Top 10 Halloween movie heroines>>

According to Vulture, Moretz and Bennett fought off stiff competition from Dakota Fanning , Emily Browning , Bella Heathcote and Lily Collins .

Last week, Golden Globe nominee Shailene Woodley was offered the title role, but decided to pass.

Aside from Carrie herself, the most critical character in the novel is Margaret White. Margaret's an abusive religious fanatic, who's also Carrie's mother. Piper Laurie portrayed her in the '76 version and received an Oscar-nomination for her daring performance.

For the remake, it's been reported that Peirce is interested in Jodie Foster and Julianne Moore for the part. Could you imagine either of them as Margaret? They're both extremely talented and could put their own spin on the character.

Once they nail down the female leads, we wonder who they'll cast as unlikely ally Sue Snell. Or mean girl Chris Hargensen? And who can forget bad boy Billy Nolan, originally played by John Travolta?

Who do you think should play the new Carrie and Margaret White?

Movie review: Dark Shadows

Welcome to Collinwood Manor where you'll find a time-warped menagerie of blood-suckers, she-devils and ghosties who'll have you groovin' all the way back to the psychedelic '70s. Johnny Depp frights and delights as the foxy, fanged Barnabas Collins in this soap opera re-vamp!

Dark Shadows Johnny Depp in front of red paintingInspired by the gothic soap opera that aired on television in the late '60s and early '70s,Dark Shadows the movie is part Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, part The Who's Tommy and part Erich Segal's Love Story -- all on LSD. But we'd expect nothing less from director Tim Burton , the master of freak-chic cinema. Here Johnny Depp's Barnabas comes from the 1700s where his jilted mistress Angelique Bouchard just happens to be a witch and dooms Barnabas to vampiric misfortune before burying him in a locked coffin for the next two centuries. Hell hath no fury like a witch scorned!

When Barnabas is accidentally unearthed, he returns to his ancestral home of Collinwood Manor to find his descendants in various stages of ennui. He even mistakes teenaged Caroline  for a prostitute as she lounges on the chaise, listening to records before complimenting her on her lovely "birthing hips." Oh, Barnabas.

Worried about her son David because he talks to dead people, matriarch Elizabeth has enlisted the help of psychiatrist Dr. Hoffman , who pops more pills than any of her patients. But the really big bummer facing the Collins family of the 20th century is their once successful fishing business has been sent down the drain by blonde-bombshell Angie's more enterprising fishery. Angie is actually the bewitching Angelique, the immortal sorceress responsible for starting this whole wretched mess. Can Barnabas destroy Angelique and save the family business all under the guise of night?

Dark Shadows is at its best when it's having fun with the style and music from the early '70s, particularly by opening the film with "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues. Throwing in some camp like a troll doll, macrame and the real Alice Cooper are also nice touches.

Collinwood Manor is deliciously ghastly and ghostly and in exquisite disrepair . The color-tweaked visuals are lush and fluid, like a good acid trip and the red hues really pop, which makes for some cool neo-gothic bloodsucking.

Johnny Depp sizzles on screen, sometimes literally. But it's the fabulous actresses who steal the show. It's difficult to say who's the fairest of them all, but Edgar Allan Poe himself would lust after each pretty, tragic waif in the film. Michelle Pfeiffer is gorgeous in pale, but Helena Bonham Carter ginger's up her look, adding a splash of anxiety disorder. Chloe Grace Moretz is alluring in her pubescent confusion, not fully understanding her sensual powers. But Eva Green is one alabaster alpha-female, a sublime succubus able to go fang to fang with Depp.

Dark Shadows Eva GreenBottom line: Johnny Depp and a bevy of beautiful actresses help Tim Burton succeed in bringing '70's kitch to the vampire genre. I only wish the campy story could have had more bite. But if you remember any part of the 1970s, you'll enjoy this nostalgic vampire fest.

Chloe Moretz

This week, Chloe showed up to The Ed Sullivan Theater for a taping of The Late Show with David Letterman in NYC sporting a fun, flirty wavy 'do. We love that Chloe has an age-appropriate yet spunky hairstyle and are digging the ever so chic beachy waves. Short hair is super hot right now, so the style is also very on trend.

The style is also super easy to recreate at home! Want to steal it the simple way? Add in a texturizing cream to damp hair and braid. Unravel it a few hours later to reveal soft beachy locks!

Chloe Moretz and Zoe Saldana's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Chloe Moretz

Chloe Moretz

For a 15-year-old, Chloe Moretz is having a pretty amazing week! The young actress' new movie, Dark Shadows, premieres today and did we mention she co-stars in it with Johnny Depp? Yep, pretty major.

This week, Chloe showed up to a showing of The Late Show with David Letterman in NYC in a totally gorgeous ensemble that we're coveting. Let's start with the hair. Is it really any surprise that this gal made our Celeb Hairstyle of the Week today? Nope, her wavy hair is looking flawless here.

Let's move on to that dress! We're really digging this fun blue leopard print Christopher Kane number. It takes a professional silhouette and inserts some major fun into the look with the black leather trim and the cheeky print. And what about the shoes? Chloe finished her look off with black strappy Jimmy Choo heels.

The final verdict? We love the mix of fun and professional going on here. Chloe could have easily looked a bit stiff if this dress didn't have such a fun print, but she went for a youthful look and totally made it her own!

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana

Doesn't Zoe Saldana look adorable? We think so! The actress attended the Cosmopolitan for Latinas premiere in NYC this week and showed off her sleek figure in a lilac Elie Saab dress that we're crushing on.

Zoom on in and you'll see just how gorgeous the detail on the bust of this dress is. Honestly, it's a sparkly, flowery dream! Also, take a look at those shoes! Super sexy. Zoe also does a nice job of keeping her hair and makeup somewhat simple. After all, when you're wearing such a gorgeous dress, it's best to let it speak for itself!

The final verdict? We love the balance of sexy and sweet in this look. Since the top is rather sheer, it's best that the bottom offers full coverage. And overall, Zoe looks incredible!

Julianne Moore is about to go crazy for Carrie. The red-haired beauty will turn up the heat in Kimberly Peirce's adaptation of the Stephen King novel. She'll play mama bear to a telekinetic and uncontrollable Chloë Grace Moretz.

Julianne MooreJulianne Moore has gone koo-koo for Cocoa Puffs. The Academy Award-nominated actress has landed the coveted role of a lifetime.

It's been confirmed that Moore will star alongside Chloë Grace Moretz in the upcoming Carrie remake.

Carrie remake: Who'll be our new horror heroine? >>

According Deadline, Moore has signed on to play Margaret White, Carrie's overbearing mother. She'll be taking over for Piper Laurie, who portrayed the character in the 1976 version.

Laurie received an Oscar nomination for her off-kilter performance as a woman taken over by religion and paranoia.

Julianne Moore to play Sarah Palin>>

Moretz will star in the title role, which was originally played by Sissy Spacek. Like Laurie, Spacek was also nominated for an Oscar, but in the lead actress category.

Aside from Moretz, another starlet has been cast in Carrie. Her name's Gabriella Wilde, and she'll be the new Sue Snell . In Brian De Palma's adaptation, Sue was a good girl, who got mixed up in the wrong crowd.

Movie review: Dark Shadows>>

She wasn't Carrie's friend, but she had sympathy for her situation. Sue was also one of the few survivors of the infamous prom night massacre.

The new Carrie will stick closer to the source material than the previous film. King's original story is much darker, and less campy than De Palma's take. The screenplay has been written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who's done work on Glee andBig Love.

What do you think Moore as Margaret White? Can she pull it off?

Carrie teaser trailer is released

It's been 36 years since the horror film Carrie has been on the big screen, but get ready because the telekinetically gifted teen is back in 2013.

October is the perfect month for all things spooky and terrifying, so it is quite fitting that MGM and Screen Gems released the teaser trailer for the remake of the 1976 horror film, Carrie. This time around, the social outcast is played by 15-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz while her religiously fanatical mother is played by Julianne Moore.

The movie, based on a book by thriller writer Stephen King, follows the tale of a young misfit with telekinetic powers who torments a town with her gift after the ultimate prank has been pulled on her. The original film, directed by Brian De Palma, landed Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

In the 2013 reboot, the teaser trailer shows the iconic image of Carrie bathed in blood while the rest of the town burns around her. It is merely a glimpse at the modern adaptation directed by Boys Don't Cry director, Kimberly Peirce.

While the 1976 film still resonates with movie fans, the remake is bound to find an audience, especially since the bullying story line is so timely in today's society. This adaptation also promises to focus more on King's original material and flesh out the Carrie White character.

Moretz spoke to MTV about her character at New York Comic Con, where the teaser premiered.

She said, "You start off this broken down adolescent, kind of awkward, gangly girl. She goes from gangly to this beautiful young woman... and it comes back full circle to wanting to be in her mom's arms. It's this beautiful circle, which is what happens when you're growing up."

It will be interesting to see how author King reacts given that his initial reaction to the remake was, "The real question is why, when the original was so good?"

He also oddly suggested that Lindsay Lohan star as the title character. The truth about the worthiness of the reboot will come out when the film debuts on March 15, 2013.

Chloë Moretz balances darkness with Disney

The actress has been in almost 50 films in less than 10 years. She sits down with Marie Claire this month to talk about life and her blossoming career.

Chloe Grace Moretz

Fifteen-year old Chloë Grace Moretz is quickly become one of the fastest-rising stars in Hollywood, but deep down she's still just a kid who likes her Disney. The actress sat down with Marie Claire for the Feb. 12 issue to talk about what it’s like being a teenager in the world of major-league actors.

You may know Moretz best from her parts in Kick-Ass, Dark Shadows and her guest appearances on 30 Rock, but she'll also be starring with Julianne Moore in the upcoming remake of Carrie.

“She’s one of my favorite people I’ve ever worked with,” she said of Moore in the interview. “And if I could do every single movie for the rest of my career with her, I would, because she’s brilliant.”

Moretz has worked with other big stars as well, including Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer in Dark Shadows. The Tim Burton film showed a darker side of the young actress, but Moretz said she likes it that way.

“I like doing dark material, which is interesting since I’m such the opposite person,” she said. “I’m so light and happy. I have a good family and I’m loved.”

In fact, she likes to balance that dark material with watching a channel that could also be categorized as “light and happy.”

“I’ll watch the Disney Channel. My family makes fun of me for it, but with the characters I do, I always use that as my upper,” she explained.

Moretz celebrates her sweet 16 on Sunday, but did some advance celebrating Thursday night at the Teen Vogue party, along with friends Victoria Justice, Holland Roden and Sarah Hyland.

The birthday doesn’t mean Moretz is slowing down, though. She's been acting since she was 7 years old, and continues to do as many projects as she can. Besides Carrie, set to come out in 2013, she has eight more films in the works, including a sequel to 2010’s Kick-Ass.

Chloë Grace Moretz sure likes to have a bloody good time on-screen.

She terrified us as a child vampire in Let Me In and now Chloë Grace Moretz is dipping into the horror well yet again.

Deadline reports that the actress is in negotiations to star opposite Charlize Theron in the eerie thriller Dark Places, and the plot couldn't be more intriguing.

Based on the 2009 mystery novel by Gillian Flynn, the film centers on a woman who is forced to confront the vicious massacre of her family.

Years after testifying against her own brother, who she believes is responsible for the crimes, a group known as the Kill Club attempts to prove his innocence.

If cast, Moretz will play a character named Diondra and squeeze the film into an already crowded schedule.

The 16-year-old has about seven films in the works at the moment, including the drama The Devil and the Deep Blue See and the comedy Dance of the Mirlitons. Moretz will also appear in Man Under. Directed by Tim Robbins, the dramedy also stars Michelle Pfeiffer.

It was recently announced that the star is slated to join Anne Hathaway and Sam Rockwell for the indie comedy Laggies.

Meet the new face of Carrie White. Chloë Grace Moretz tackles the classic horror icon in Kimberly Peirce's Carrie. Thursday, Yahoo Movies debuted a new trailer full of fresh footage.

Chloë Grace Moretz

Screen Gems has released the theatrical trailer for Carrie. This latest adaptation of Stephen King's novel comes from director Kimberly Peirce and stars Chloë Grace Moretz as the title character.

The horrifying story centers on the shy Carrie White, who's ostracized at both home and school. During her tumultuous teen years, she discovers that she has telekinetic powers. The ability is heightened whenever she's emotionally unstable, whether due to fear or rage.

Carrie remake: Who'll be our new horror heroine?>>

The new trailer takes us inside her torment as she's bullied by her peers. We also get a good look at Julianne Moore's take on her religious mother, Margaret. She consistently pushes for Carrie to pray and locks her in a closet. She suffers from her own mental problems, which she projects onto her daughter.

It's official: Julianne Moore is Carrie's psycho mama>>

The original 1976 version of Carrie was famous for its interpretation of her prom. It's there that she was drenched in pig's blood and lost control. In this video, you can see glimpses of the collateral damage.

Carrie's powers are a lot stronger than we remember. At one point, she crushes a car in the blink of an eye. This trailer puts the teaser to shame.

Where are they now? Past winners of the MTV Movie Awards

The MTV Movie Awards are known for celebrating film in a slightly different way, so where are the actors that the network have chosen as the best?

Anna Chlumsky

The MTV Movie Awards are over 20 years old now, and have played an important part in film over those two decades. So where are some of the most memorable winners now?

Twilight: The best winner for best movie the past four years in a row, the Twilight series may have just planned their release dates on this show. The series has finally come to an end, so there are no nominations for it this year.

2013 MTV Movie Award nominees, Ted is king!

After the big scandal of 2012 between stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, things have settled down for the stars. Both Pattinson and Stewart are also among the list of those that have won the most MTV Movie Awards: Pattinson has 10 awards and Stewart has seven.

Jim Carrey: The most winningest of all award winners at the MTV movie awards, Carrey has taken home 11 awards in his career. He's won five of the awards for Best Comedic Performance, ranging from 1994's Dumb and Dumber to 2008's Yes Man. He's also won Best Villain twice, which is pretty impressive for a comedian.

Carrey is still doing what he does best, working in movies and making a splash in the world of entertainment. His most recent feat was angering many gun supporters with a song mocking the NRA.

Rebel Wilson and Channing Tatum's abs promote the 2013 MTV Movie Awards>>

Best Breakout Star is a category that only existed for two years, but the two actresses that won the award likely have an important future in Hollywood.

Anna Kendrick: Kendrick won the award in 2010 for Up In the Air. Kendrick also played a part in the Twilight films, and since Up in the Air, has been in 18 different movies or TV shows, including 50/50 and Pitch Perfect.

Chloë Grace Moretz: The actress won the award in 2011 for her part in Kick-Ass. The rising star has since filmed Kick-Ass 2 as well as a short stint on 30 Rock. She's also been busy filming 22 different movies or TV shows since the film where she received the award. The 16-year-old will next be seen in the remake of Carrie.

Best Kiss has long been one of the favorites at the movie awards, most likely because it’s the only awards show with such a prize. The award was first given away in 1992, and the winners were two up-and-coming child stars, Macaulay Culkin and Anna Chlumsky, for My Girl. The film was the first major motion picture for Culkin since Home Alone the year before. The actor continued in the business until 1994, until his last film as a child star, Richie Rich. He then reappeared on the scene in 2003, and worked on a few shows or movies.

Since then, Culkin has done only a few projects, most notably as a voice on Robot Chicken from 2005 to 2010. The actor was married in 1998, to actress Rachel Miner, but divorced in 2000. Since 2010, the actor has stayed mostly out of the public eye. But since he's still only 32 years old, there's a good chance he's got a lot of acting left in him.

Chloë Moretz balances darkness with Disney

Anna Chlumsky took a fairly similar path to Culkin’s. After My Girl, the actress did a few children’s movies and TV shows, but disappeared in 1998 to go to college.
